CAMBRIDGE, MA – Pushing several matches deep into sets and even taking one set on the day, Siena Men's Tennis showed out in a competitive nature before falling to nationally-ranked #11 Harvard 4-0 at the host's Robert M. Beren Tennis Center Friday in a NCAA Tournament First Round match.
The Saints' 2023 season was historical in many respects in what was the program's first NCAA Tournament bid, first MAAC Championship and first regular season tri-championship.
The team also swept all the major MAAC awards for the first time as head coach Jeff Osborn won the MAAC Coach of the Year honors, Dante Russo was the MAAC Player of the Year and Edward Vo was named the conference's Rookie of the Year.
Siena (13-11) had their four-match winning streak snapped, but certainly made the Crimson (20-5) sweat for it especially in the matches that remained unfinished due to the other matches finishing sooner.
"I'm so incredibly proud of all of you," an emotional coach Jeff Osborn told his team after the match. You showed them what Siena tennis was all about and I won't forget what you all did for this program and for me."
At the singles #5 position, Vo took the opening set 6-3 and was locked at 4-4 in the second set against Steven Sun before Harvard wrapped up play. The Aussie bellowed out jolts of energy throughout the match, yelling "come on" several times, inspiring the Siena faithful to cheer him on.
From the No. 1 singles spot, Russo had a strong showing as well with a gamely performance against nationally-ranked #37 Harris Walker.
The junior from Deerfield Beach, FL took the first two points before losing a hard-fought opening set 7-5. Walker led 2-1 in the second set when the other matches called it.
At the singles #6 spot, senior Andrea Moro challenged Valdemar Pape to a 6-4 first set battle and trailed only 3-2 in the second set before play stopped.
The Crimson are coming off back-to-back Ivy League Championships in which they went undefeated at 7-0 in conference play in consecutive years for the first time since the 2003-2004 seasons.
Nationally-ranked singles #35 junior Henry von der Schulenburg topped Tomas del Olmo 6-0, 6-1 from the singles #2 spot.
Agustin Suarez dropped the #3 singles flight to sophomore Daniel Milavsky 6-0, 6-2. Ronan Jachuck bested Jose Pablo Davila 6-2, 6-3 from the #4 singles spot.
In doubles action, Russo and Vo fell to the team of Milavsky and Walker 6-3. Jachuck and Sun defeated Matt Nardone and Suarez 6-0 to take the doubles point.
Harvard advances to play Arizona State on Saturday after it defeated Illinois 4-3.
