Rider’s Koonce, Canisius’s Giese & Fairfield’s Weinberg Take Home Final Rawlings MAAC Softball Weekly Awards of 2023

MAAC Player of the Week, Brianna Koonce, wrapped up her senior season with a flurry, hitting .533 (8-15) with two doubles and a home run, driving in four and scoring a run as the Broncs went 3-3 on the road at Mount St. Mary's, Canisius and Niagara. She had a hit in both games against Mount St. Mary's, including a 2-for-3 effort with a solo home run in Game 2. At Niagara, Koonce went 5-for-6 with a pair of doubles, a walk and three RBIs as Rider swept the Purple Eagles.
 
 
Pitcher of the Week
Megan Giese, Canisius
Jr., Buffalo, NY, Orchard Park
 
Megan Giese closed out the regular season in dominant fashion, pitching in all four games against Rider and Mount St. Mary's over the weekend. Giese went 3-0 with a 0.39 ERA, striking out 34 batters in 18.0 innings pitched while allowing just two runs, one earned, on nine hits and four walks. On Saturday in the second game against the Mount, Giese fanned a season-high 14 batters to help Canisius win its second straight MAAC Regular Season title. On the day, Giese fanned 22 Mount batters over 12 innings while yielding just one unearned run.
 
Rookie of the Week
Alyssa Weinberg, Fairfield
Fr., Levittown, NY, Division
 
Alyssa Weinberg earned a win and two saves in three appearances, tossing 9.1 scoreless innings in a 5-0 week for the Stags. The freshman allowed four hits and fanned 13 hitters during the week. She opened things with three scoreless innings by allowing one hit and striking out six to earn a save against Army. She retired the only batter she faced to close the game in a win against Siena. Weinberg finished the week with six scoreless innings, yielding three hits and registering seven strikeouts to earn the win that clinched a spot in the MAAC tournament for the Stags.
 
 
The 2023 MAAC Softball Championship is a six-team double elimination tournament taking place between May 10-14, 2023. The championship will be hosted by the highest seed.
