POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist Athletic Department has announced the promotion of Deepak Sharma to Director of Tennis. With his background in coaching, Sharma will continue to add depth to the tennis teams as he presents a variety of tennis disciplines including: strategy, technique, drills, mindset, strength, conditioning, mobility, and recovery.
"We are very excited to welcome Deepak Sharma as our newest head coach. We were fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Deepak over the past year in his role as an assistant coach," Director of Athletics Tim Murray said. "I am very confident that Deepak will challenge our student-athletes not only athletically, but emotionally and academically as well, to provide them with an outstanding student-athlete experience. The needs of student-athletes have evolved, and I feel certain that Deepak understands the challenges of a Division I athlete in a highly competitive academic and athletic environment."
Sharma has held the previous position of head coach at Trinity School beginning in 2018 as well as Fordham University in 2022 where he began the semester as an assistant only shortly before being promoted to interim head coach. Sharma is passionate about helping his players succeed by managing team relationships, effectively interacting with players across all abilities and using building programs to meet team targets.
"I'm extremely grateful and excited to be named the Director of Tennis at Marist," Sharma Said. "I'd like to begin by thanking Tim Murray along with the search committee for their due diligence and support of my vision for the tennis programs at Marist. I mentioned to Tim in his office that this is my dream job. I've always dreamt of running a program, building a system of success where young adults can flourish and reach their potential on and off the court."
As an assistant men's tennis coach at Marist College this past season, Sharma supervised daily practices, helped discuss program needs and visions and helped ensure the team was prepared in all areas.
"Under my leadership, we will compete for MAAC championships, NCAA bids and be a leading program at Marist that students, faculty and alumni can be proud of. I look forward to getting started with our retuning players," Sharma said. "Lastly, a massive thank you to my parents who introduced me to the game I love as a young child, running around as a ball kid for them while they played at our local park - this is only possible with their love and support."
Sharma graduated from the University of Richmond in 1999 with a B.A. in Health and Sport Administration, where he earned his spot as captain of the tennis team his senior year. Sharma's coaching style emphasizes the importance of team leadership, while incorporating crucial values such as: hard work, dedication, team spirit and sportsmanship.
