Women's Basketball 7/27/2023 1:20:00 PM Canisius' Karatasiou to Play for Greece in FIBA U20 European Division B Championship The Greece Basketball Association announced that guard Xanthippi Karatasiou has been named to their roster for the FIBA U20 Women's European Championship Division B from July 28 – Aug. 6 in Craiova, Romania. Karatasiou is one of eight Division I basketball players named to the squad and she only athlete from a MAAC school. The Katerini, Greece, native is no stranger to international play, as she represented her home nation previously at the 2019 U16 FIBA European Championship in Skopje, Turkey. Karatasiou appeared in seven games, playing a tournament-high 15 minutes against host nation Turkey. A MAAC All-Academic Team selection in 2022-23, Karatasiou played six games for the Golden Griffins last season. In her collegiate debut against Buffalo on Nov. 9, she recorded a steal and rebound. The 2023 FIBA U20 Women's European Championship Division B will feature 17 nations across four groups. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the quarterfinal round to compete for the title while the remaining nine teams will be moved into two new groups to determine ninth through 17th place. The top three finishing teams from the quarterfinal round will be promoted to Division A for the next Eurobasket event. Greece is in Group B where they will take on host Romania, along with Ireland and Georgia. All games will be streamed on the FIBA YouTube channel. Greece will open the tournament against Ireland on July 28 at 1:30 p.m. local time (6:30 a.m. EST).
