Rider’s James and Iona’s Quigley Named Hercules Tires MAAC Men’s Basketball Weekly Award Honorees

Player of the Week
Mervin James, Rider
R-Sr., St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands, Pebblebrook

James averaged 23.0 points and 8.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 46.9 percent (15-32) from the floor and 100.0 percent (16-16) from the free-throw line in the Broncs' two road wins over Saint Peter's and Mount St. Mary's this weekend. He went for 14 of his 20 points in the second half at Saint Peter's to knock the Peacocks out of first place Thursday. He finished at 8-for-18 from the floor and 4-for-4 from the free-throw line to go along with nine rebounds. James then scored 26 points at Mount St. Mary's, making 7-of-14 attempts from the floor and all 12 of his free-throw attempts, including eight in the final 38 seconds, each time pushing the Rider advantage from two to four points (one-possession game to two). His 12-for-12 performance from the line was the first by a Bronc since Daniel Stewart almost 10 years ago to the day (13-13, Jan. 24, 2014). He hit 12 of Rider's 17 free-throw attempts in a 17-for-17 night from the line for the Broncs, Rider's first 100% effort from the free-throw line of more than 12 attempts since at least the 1991-92 (as far back as Rider's box score collection dates). Already a 1,000-point scorer at Rider, James also reached the 500-rebound plateau at The Mount, becoming the 19th Bronc to achieve both feats. James has now scored 20 points or more 10 times this season and leads the MAAC at 19.5 points per game.
