Rider Tops The Leaderboards for Opening Night of MAAC Indoor Track and Field Championship

NEW YORK, NY (Feb. 24, 2024) – The 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championships kicked off tonight at the Armory in New York City with a pair of weight throw finals, a pair of long jump and high jump finals, men’s pole vault, the men’s and women’s 5000m finals and a pair of distance medley relays. At the conclusion of day one’s action, Rider owns the top spot for both the men and women’s leaderboards. 
 
The Manhattan Jaspers kicked off the meet in exciting fashion with Alex Kristeller breaking a MAAC weight throw record with a distance of 21.80, passing fellow Jasper Thomas Jacob Freeman’s previous record of 21.33m. The 2023 women’s weight throw champion Kristin Stickdorn’s claimed gold again with a 17.92m throw. Mount St. Mary’s Tyler Cash cashed in a personal record and claimed the men’s pole vault gold and Justin Sluijter won gold in men’s long jump with a distance of 7.74, a PR for him as well. On the women’s side, Rider’s Mariah Stephens had a personal record distance with a mark of 5.82m, winning the women’s long jump.
 
On the track, Iona’s Lachlan Wellington captured the men’s gold in the 5000m with a time of 14:15,12 and Manhattan’s Andria Scaglione captured the gold with a time of 16:49.16. The final track event of the evening was the distance medley relays where the Iona men’s squad finished with a time of 10:00.31 and Siena’s squad claimed the gold on the women’s side with a time of 11:55.71.
 
Finishing out day one, Rider’s Devynn Lee won the high jumps on the men’s side with a mark of 2.03m. Shaelyn Murphy from Quinnipiac won gold with a mark of 1.68m on the women’s side, a personal record for the Bobcat
