Iona’s Morris and Wagner’s Alonso and Arias, Earn Kap7 Water Polo Weekly Awards

Offensive Player of the Week
Carlota Alonso, Wagner

Over the four games during the weekend, junior attacker Carlota Alonso scored 15 goals on 25 shots with 7 assists, 12 steals, and 5 sprint wins. Alonso and the Seahawks earned wins over La Salle, Villanova, VMI, and #22 LIU.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Lilly Morris, Iona
Sr., Southfield, MI, Seaholm

Senior goalie Lilly Morris played 11 out of 12 quarters in net for Iona picking up two MAAC wins over Siena & Mount St. Mary's. Though three games she gave up 31 goals, made 37 saves and added six steals. In the win over Mount St. Mary's she set a season high with 16 saves. She also helped out on the offensive side with three assists.
 
Rookie of the Week
Ana Arias, Wagner
Fr., Madrid, Spain, Colegi Closa
 
Over the four games during the weekend, freshman attacker Ana Arias scored 10 goals on 12 shots with 4 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block. Arias earned wins over La Salle, Villanova, VMI and #22 LIU. Arias had 7 goals against VMI alone.
 
The 2024 MAAC Water Polo Championship will be held at McCann Natatorium on the campus of Marist College in Poughkeepsie, NY. Marist has hosted the Water Polo Championship since 2003. The opening round begins Friday, April 26, followed by the semifinal round on Saturday, April 27, and the final round will take place on Sunday, April 28.

With 11 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) is in its 43rd year of competition during the 2023-24 academic year. Current conference members include: Canisius University, Fairfield University, Iona University, Manhattan College, Marist College, Mount St. Mary’s University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s University, and Siena College. Merrimack College and Sacred Heart University will join the MAAC as full members in the 2024-25 academic year, expanding the conference to 13 institutions.
