POUGHKEEPPSIE, N.Y. (Apr. 26, 2024)- The opening round of the 2024 MAAC Water Polo Chmapionship concluded this afternoon with Mount St. Mary’s and Iona advancing to the semifinal round of the 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Water Polo Championship held at Marist’s McCann Natatorium.

In the first opening round game of the 2024 MAAC Water Polo Championship, Mount St. Mary’s defeated reigning champs by a score of 9-8. The Mountaineers will move on to the semifinal round tomorrow to face No. 1 (RED) Wagner at 1pm. Today’s victory is the program's first postseason win.


Mount Notes
- Beatrice Vieira led Mount St. Mary’s in scoring with three goals on the day, including the game winning goal that found the back of the net with six seconds remaining in the game.
- Ana Luisa Cotta and Anna Kegel also scored two goals each for the Mountaineers.
-On the other side of the ball, goalkeeper Olivia Fernie, saw seven saves including a penalty stoppage.
-Mount St. Mary’s improves to 15-14 on the season.
 
LIU Notes
- Paola Dominguez-Castro led the Shark’s offensive efforts, scoring four goals off nine shots. Elena Camarena saw three goals.
- Kate Hinrichs helped her team offensively with two goals and three assists.
-In goal, Martina Giannoni tallied five saves for the Sharks.
-The Sharks conclude their season with a 22-7 record.

2024 MAAC Water Polo Championship-Opening Round

Iona defeated La Salle 12-9 in the second opening round matchup of the 2024 MAAC Water Polo Championship. Iona will advance to tomorrow’s semifinal round where they will take on top-seeded Marist at 4pm.
 
Iona Notes
-Two Gaels led the scoring effort for Iona as Mia Tovar and Kaya Hart saw three goals each.
-Iona outshot the Explorers with 32 shots compared to the La Salle’s 24.
-Defensively, goalkeeper Lilly Morris tallied six saves on the day.
 
La Salle Notes
- Sofia Kolovou and Martina Bonet Saez found the back of the net three times each for the Explorers.
-Three other challenged the Gael offense, tallying nine saves on the day.
-La Salle concludes their season with a 15-19 record.
