Day One of MAAC Softball Championship Wraps Up in Poughkeepsie

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 8, 2024)- The 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Softball Championship began on Wednesday, May 8 at Marist College’s Softball Park in Poughkeepsie, NY. The first day of competition featured No.3 Rider University, No. 4 Canisius University, No. 5 Iona University and No. 6 Siena College.

2024 MAAC Softball Championship- Game 1 Box Score
 
The MAAC Softball Championship kicked off at 11am with No. 3 Rider taking on No. 6 Siena.
Siena picked up a 5-1 win over Rider to advance to the next round of competition. No. 6 Siena will face No. 2 Niagara on Thursday, May 11 at 9am.
 
Siena Notes
-The Saints got off to a hot start with a three-run homerun from Emma Peterson.
-Siena’s Fletcher and Swinson both had hits in the 4th, bringing in two more runs, putting the score at 5-0.
-Alissa Eimont got the win, pitching the full seven innings.
- Today’s victory was the team's 30th win of the season, making Siena the only team in the MAAC to reach 30 wins in each of the last three years.
- The Saints face off against the Purple Eagles in postseason play for the first time since 2019 on Thursday at 9:30AM.
 
Rider Notes
-The Broncs bats were led by Abby Cruz, how had two hits, and Kendall Reda-Fehsal and Maddie Luedtke, who each had one hit.
- Luedtke’s fifth inning homer brought in the lone Rider run.
- Jessie Niegocki started in the circle for Rider, getting one strike out. Fallyn Stoeckel pitched the final 3.1 innings in relief against Siena, holding the Saints to one hit.

2024 MAAC Softball Championship- Game 2 Box Score
 
Game 2 of the MAAC Softball Championship put Canisius over Iona, 4-2, to advance the Griffs to the quarterfinals on Thursday. Canisius takes on top seeded Marist at 12pm.
 
Canisius Notes
- Rosie Gomez, Morgan Cook and Hannah Hagerman put the Griffs in the lead in the first four innings against a scoreless Iona.
-Christie McGee-Ross smacked a ball out of the park in the bottom of the fifth. Today was her fourth-straight game with a home run, dating back to April 28 when the Griffs played at Marist during the regular season
-Megan Giese picked up her 17th win of the season in the circle and sealed the deal by getting Iona's Kaylin Flukey to pop up to shortstop to end the game.
 
Iona Notes
-Kayla Haywood led the Gael bats with two hits on four at-bats, bringing in one run for Iona.
-Six other Gaels had hits against the Griffs pitchers.
-The Gael’s seventh inning saw two runs, one from Haywood’s single and the other from a walk on a bases loaded situation.
-The loss to Canisius put the Gaels in the elimination game against Rider.

2024 MAAC Softball Championship- Game 3


The final game of the day was the elimination game between No. 3 Rider and No. 5 Iona. It was a scoreless game until the fourth inning when Iona got hot with back-to-back homeruns from Jamie Sheeran and Hailey Guerrero. Sheeran got one more run across the plate in the fifth but the Broncs weren’t to be denied. In the bottom of the seventh, Abby Cruz and Jessie Niegocki both had hits to get the Broncs on the board. Iona held the lead thorugh th efinal innings and will take on Marist at 12pm tomorrow.
 
Iona  Notes

-Sheeran’s homerun was  her11th homerun of the season and the 48th of her career.
-Samantha Reib pitched the full seven for the  Gaels, not letting a hit for the first three innigns.
-Reib held the Broncs hitless till a one-out single down the right field line in the bottom of the fifth inning.
 
Rider Notes
-Three Broncs had hits against the Gaels.
- Anna-Marie Groskritz starrted against Iona where she struck out two batters over 4.2 innings pitched.
- Fallyn Stoeckel came on in relief against Iona, pitching 2.1 scoreless innings, allowing  one hit and stricking out one.
-The Broncs conclude their season at 23-28.
