Day Two of MAAC Softball Championship Continues in Poughkeepsie

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (May 9, 2024)- The 2024 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Softball Championship continued on Thursday, May 9 at Marist College’s Softball Park in Poughkeepsie, NY. The second day of competition featured No. 1 Marist College, No.2 Niagara University, No. 4 Canisius University, No. 5 Iona University and No. 6 Siena College.

2024 MAAC Softball Championship- Game 5 Box Score
 
The MAAC Softball Championship continued  at 11am with No. 2 Niagara taking on No. 6 Siena in the first game of the quarterfinals.
Siena picked up a 3-2 win over Niagara  to advance to the next round of competition. No. 6 Siena will face No. 4 Canisius on Friday, May 10 in the semifinals.
 
Siena Notes
-A three-run homerun from Emma Peterson in the top of the third got Siena on the board.
-Pardo and Fletcher also had one hit each on the day.
-Alissa Eimont pitched the full seven innings, holding the Purple Eagles to six hits and one run.
-Siena advances to Friday’s semifinal game and will take on Canisius.
 
Niagara Notes
-In thebottom of the third, Brianna Delaney’s single got two Niagara players across to the plate to narrow their deficit to one run.
-Maddie Hickingbottom was in the circle for the Purple Eagles, giving up five hits and five walks.

2024 MAAC Softball Championship- Game 5 Box Score
 
Game 5 of the 2024 MAAC Softball Championship saw No.4 Canisius take down top-seeded Marist. The Griffs took the lead in the third and never gave Marist a chance to get across the plate for the remainder of the game. Canisius advances to the semifinal round and takes on Siena.
 
Canisius Notes
-Five Griffs got hits against the Red Foxes, including Giese who smack a homerun in the top of the fourth inning.
-Megan Geise pitched the full seven for Canisius, allowing just one run from a homerun in the 2nd inning.
-Canisius defense kept 13 Marist players on base over the seven innings.
 
Marist Notes
- Isabella Manory crushed her first home run of the season in the second inning, getting the Red Foxes on the board.
-Miah McDonald and Alyssa Grupp each had two hits for the Red Foxes.
- Marist returns to action on Friday at 1:30 p.m taking on Niagara.

The final game of the day was an elimination game between No. 5 Iona and No. 2 Niagara, who fell to Siena earlier in the day. Niagara pushed past the Gaels, winning 12-3. Niagara will face Marist in the semifinals on Friday.
 
Niagara Notes
-The Purple Eagle offense had 13 hits against the Gaels, led by Selah Moyer who had two hits on the day.
- In the circle, Maddie Hickingbottom struck out seven batters.
-Maggie Kellner knocked one out of the park to bring three runs in.
 
Iona Notes
- Brianna Bailey got the Gaels on the board by launching a a three-run homerun in the top of the seventh inning.
-Kaylin Flukey had two hits for the Iona offense and scored one run.
- Iona concludes their season with an 18-29 overall record.
 

The semifinal round of the 2024 MAAC Softball Championship will take place on Friday, May 10 at Marist College’s Softball Park. Game 7 features No. 4 Canisius and No. 6 Siena, Game 8 features No. 1 Marist and No. 2 Niagara and Game 9 will take the winner of Game 8 vs the loser of Game 7.  Games begin at 11am.
