Niagara’s Huhtala and Olschefskie, and Rider’s Walsh Named Jersey Mike’s MAAC Women’s Lacrosse Weekly Award Winners

Offensive Player of the Week
Katie Walsh, Rider

Attacker Katie Walsh scored six goals and added a pair of assists as the Broncs defeated FDU, 18-7, to open the season. Walsh also added three draw controls and two ground balls in the win.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Sydney Huhtala, Niagara
Jr., Baldwinsville, NY
 
Junior defender, Sydney Huhtala, was a disruptive force in Niagara's backfield against Arizona State, recording a game-high 6 caused turnovers and collecting 7 ground balls. Huhtala's defensive effort helped Niagara achieve a perfect 17-for-17 clearing percentage. She caused multiple turnovers in key situations, including forcing two in the third quarter that led to scoring opportunities. Her 7 ground balls were also a game high, as she consistently gave Niagara extra possessions in transition.
 
Rookie of the Week
Avery Olschefskie, Niagara
Fr., Glastonbury, CT
 
Freshman midfielder Avery Olschefskie led Niagara's offense with a game-high 3 goals, including a man-up score, and added an assist in the Purple Eagles' season opener against Arizona State. Olschefskie was efficient with her shooting, scoring her hat trick on just 4 shots on goal. She also showed her all-around game by collecting a ground ball and earning 5 draw controls. Olschefskie opened the scoring with Niagara's first goal of the season and helped spark a fourth-quarter comeback attempt with timely scoring.

 
The 2025 MAAC Women's Lacrosse Championship is an eight-team, single-elimination championship taking place between April 25 and May 4, 2025. The first and second rounds will be hosted by the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds on Friday and Sunday, April 25 and 27. The bracket will reseed following the second round and the semifinals and championship final will be hosted by the No. 1 seed in the field on Friday, May 2 and Sunday, May 4.
