Rider Alum Earns Prestigious Pat Tillman Award for Service

EDISON, NJ (July 16, 2026) – Former Rider University cross country and track & field student-athlete and current United States Coast Guard rescue swimmer Scott Ruskan '21 was recognized on one of sports' biggest stages Wednesday night, receiving the prestigious Pat Tillman Award for Service at the 2026 ESPYS. Ruskan earned the honor following his heroic efforts during the devastating Central Texas flash floods in the summer of 2025, where he helped rescue nearly 200 individuals during the emergency response.

Serving on the first rescue mission of his Coast Guard career, Petty Officer Third Class Ruskan played a critical role in the lifesaving efforts and was later recognized by U.S. Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem for his actions during the emergency response.

Despite the national recognition, Ruskan used his acceptance speech to highlight the collective effort behind the rescue mission and to recognize the bravery displayed by others during the tragedy.

"It took a complete army of people to get this done," Ruskan said during his acceptance speech. "There were a lot of heroes that day who aren't getting an ESPY award — the campers and camp counselors who helped each other out of the floodwaters in the middle of the night, hours before I ever showed up or any rescue crews arrived. You are alive today because of your own bravery and quick action. Those people saved far more lives than we did."

Ruskan also took time to remember those who lost their lives in the disaster.

"Our hearts go out to the 28 people who lost their lives that day and their families. I think about you all the time."

The Pat Tillman Award for Service is presented annually to an individual with a strong connection to sports who has served others in a manner that reflects the legacy of former NFL player and United States Army Ranger Pat Tillman. The award recognizes extraordinary courage, selflessness, leadership, and a commitment to service and protecting others.
