Five MAAC Women's Basketball Teams Score Opening Day Victories

EDISON, NJ (November 10, 2021) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) had five women’s basketball teams notch opening day victories for the first time since November 11, 2016.

Senior Lou Lopez-Senechal was one of four Fairfield University Women's Basketball student-athletes to reach double figures as she scored her 1,000th career point to help the Stags to a convincing 76-52 victory over Brown in the 2021-22 season opener. The quartet of Stags in double figures was led by a career-high 20 points from Callie Cavanaugh as the Stags scored 45 second half points to pull away for the victory.

The Iona College women's basketball team defeated Bryant 60-56 on Tuesday night at the Chace Athletic Center. The Gaels defense forced 32 turnovers and Juana Camilion's 15 points helped the Maroon & Gold open up the 2021-22 season with a victory.

Manhattan opened up their non-conference slate of games on a winning note by picking up a 74-66 win over St. Francis Brooklyn. A 7-0 run late in the fourth quarter on the strength of two layups from Courtney Warley and a three from Dee Dee Davis increased Manhattan's lead to 13 and they never looked back.

The Marist women's basketball team defeated defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Drexel in its season opener, 52-50. With the score tied at 50, Zaria DeMember-Shazer's layup with 12 seconds remaining proved to be the game-winner. Julianna Bonilla led all scorers with 16 points in 24 minutes off the bench. Kiara Fisher and DeMember-Shazer added 11.

Niagara erased a 19-point deficit to defeat Loyola by the final score of 81-71 Tuesday afternoon at the Gallagher Center. Four Purple Eagles recorded double-figures, including a career and game-high 22 points from senior Ally Haar.

A 26-0 run spanning nearly eight minutes over the first two quarters helped Buffalo to a 102-42 victory over Canisius in non-conference women's basketball action Tuesday evening at Alumni Arena. Senior guard Erika Joseph and sophomore guard Dani Haskell led Canisius with 13 points each. Joseph's 13 points is a career high, besting an 11-point performance against Buffalo last season.

Senior Rose Caverly scored a team-best 16 points as the Quinnipiac women's basketball team dropped in its 2021-22 opener against Fordham, 79-71, in overtime on Tuesday evening inside of Rose Hill Gym. Junior forward Mikala Morris added 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds, while senior guard Mackenzie DeWees contributed 15 points and seven rebounds in the loss.

The Siena Saints would begin their 2021-22 campaign with a heart breaker as the Green and Gold would fall to the Binghamton Bearcats by a final score of 59-55 on the road Tuesday evening. The Saints received a 16-point game from fifth year guard Rayshel Brown.
