Five Men’s MAAC Teams Post Statement Wins on Sunday in Out of Conference Play

EDISON, NJ (Dec. 13, 2021) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) went a combined 5-1 on Sunday in men’s basketball non-conference action, with MAAC teams outscoring their opponents by a combined 134 points. Fairfield, Iona, Niagara, and Saint Peter’s each won by double figures, while Monmouth led by as many as 19 in another impressive road win.

Fairfield University men's basketball allowed a season-low 47 points to roll past host William & Mary, 70-47, on Sunday afternoon in Williamsburg, Virginia. The Stags' offense was led by 15 points apiece from Taj Benning and Caleb Green, while Allan Jeanne-Rose also reached double figures with 10 points. The win for Fairfield was the team’s fourth consecutive victory.

The Iona College men's basketball toppled Ivy League favorite Yale, 91-77, in non-conference action at the Naismith Hall of Fame Basketball Invitational at the Barclays Center. Five Gaels scored 10 or more points in the win, led by Tyson Jolly who was named the game's most outstanding performer, scoring 21 points, which matched a season-high for the graduate guard. Dylan van Eyck (17 points), Quinn Slazinski (16 points), Nelly Junior Joseph who had his second straight and MAAC leading fifth double-double (15 points and 10 rebounds) and Elijah Joiner (10 points) each surpassed double digits. Iona's 9-2 start matches its best in the last 26 seasons, equaling the program's nine wins in 11 games during the NCAA at-large campaign of 2011-12.

Monmouth men’s basketball defeated its second high-major opponent of the season, knocking off Pittsburgh of the ACC 56-52, on the road Sunday night, after holding leads of as many as 19 points twice in the second half. The win was the Hawks sixth true road win of the season, which leads the nation. Monmouth was led offensively by 17 points from George Papas, 14 points by Shavar Reynolds, and 10 points from Marcus McClary. The 8-2 start is the best for the program since 2016-17 and the seven non-conference wins is tied for second most in program history.

Niagara men’s basketball posted its largest margin of victory in the modern era as a Division I team, blowing out Buffalo State, 112-52 on Sunday. All 12 players scored at least three points, with six players scoring 10 or more. Justin Roberts led the charge with 17 points, followed by 14 points from Marcus Hammond, 13 points by Rob Brown, 12 apiece from Julian Mackey and Nicholas Kratholm, and 10 by Touba Traore. The Purple Eagles last defeated a team by 60 or more points over a century ago, during the 1914-15 season, when they defeated Canisius, 78-11.

Saint Peter's men's basketball team recorded its most lopsided victory since 1983, taking down Nyack College 87-48 Sunday inside Run Baby Run Arena. Every Peacock to appear in the contest registered at least three points and seven finished with at least six points, led by Fousseyni Drame’s second double-double of the season, scoring a career-high 22 points and pulling in 12 rebounds. Daryl Banks III and Isiah Dasher chipped in with 15 points each as well.

The Marist men's basketball team fell to Navy, 67-61, in a non-conference game at McCann Arena on Sunday afternoon. Ricardo Wright (18), Jao Ituka (17), and Samkelo Cele (10) led the Red Foxes in scoring.
