EDISON, NJ (September 1, 2021) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) today officially announced the 2021-22 Women's Basketball conference schedule.
All 11 MAAC institutions will play a 20-game conference slate, seeing every opponent once at home and once on the road. Conference play will begin on Friday, Dec. 17, and run through Saturday, March 5, with a one-week winter break taking place from Wednesday, Dec. 22 to Wednesday, Dec. 29.
The 2021-22 campaign will conclude with the 2022 Hercules Tires MAAC Men’s & Women’s Basketball Championships from March 8-12 in Atlantic City, NJ. The historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall will once again play host to the championships for the third-straight season.
The conference tournament champion will earn the league's automatic bid to the 2022 NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament. The 2021 MAAC Champion, Marist College, will look to punch their ticket back to the NCAA Tournament and claim a record-setting 12
th MAAC Championship.
Highlights of the 2021-22 Schedule:
- Niagara University opens the conference schedule when they host Saint Peter’s University on Friday, Dec. 17.
- Canisius College (vs. Saint Peter’s), Fairfield University (vs. Marist), Iona College (vs. Monmouth University), and Rider University (vs. Quinnipiac University) each start their conference slate at home.
- The rematch of the 2021 MAAC Championship between Marist and Saint Peter’s takes place on Saturday, Jan. 29 in Jersey City and again on Thursday, Feb. 17 in Poughkeepsie.
- Recent head coaching hires Sahar Nusseibeh (Canisius), Ginny Boggess (Monmouth), and Jim Jabir (Siena) will face off against each other when Canisius hosts the Saints on Saturday, Jan. 29, and the Hawks on Thursday, Feb. 10. Monmouth will welcome the Griffs on Saturday, Jan. 22, and Siena on Saturday, March 5. Siena will see the Hawks and Griffs visit on Thursday, Feb. 3, and Thursday, Feb. 24 respectively.
- Reigning MAAC Co-Rookie of the Year Makayla Firebaugh and the Rider Broncs will face off against Fairfield’s 2020-21 All-MAAC First Team selection, Lou Lopez-Senechal and MAAC Sixth Player of the Year, Andrea Hernangomez, on Saturday, Jan. 8 in Lawrenceville and Thursday, March 3 in Bridgeport, CT.
- Saint Peter’s will play their first conference game at the newly renovated Yanitelli Center on Thursday, Dec. 30, when they take on Quinnipiac.
- Manhattan returns with 2020-21 All-MAAC Second Team selections, Dee Dee Davis and Courtney Warley, they and the Jaspers will take on crosstown rival Iona on Thursday, Jan. 13, at Draddy Gymnasium and Thursday, Jan. 27, at Hynes Center.
- Canisius and Niagara resume their "Battle of the Bridge" series on Saturday, Jan. 8 (at Canisius) and Feb. 26 (at Niagara).
- Quinnipiac brings back both of their 2020-21 MAAC Major Award Winners in Player of the Year, Mackenzie DeWees, and Defensive Player of the Year, Mikala Morris. The Bobcats will battle reigning MAAC Champion, Marist, on Thursday, Feb. 3, and Thursday, Feb. 24.
- The season concludes on Saturday, March 5, with Canisius hosting Iona, Fairfield traveling to Saint Peter’s, Marist taking on Manhattan, Siena visiting Monmouth, and Quinnipiac playing Rider.
