EDISON, NJ (Jan. 24, 2022) – Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball league action continued on Sunday with a full slate of conference games. Iona improved to a perfect 8-0, Canisius snapped Saint Peter’s 2022 unbeaten streak, Monmouth won its second straight, and both Fairfield and Rider snapped losing streaks to highlight the day.

Canisius scored a 63-60 win over Saint Peter’s on Sunday at the Koessler Athletic Center for its second straight win. The Golden Griffins used late free throws to secure the win, snapping the Peacocks’ four-game winning streak and unbeaten record in the 2022 calendar year. Ahamadou Fofana led Canisius with 15 points, while Jordan Henderson scored 14 points and Scott Hitchon scored 11. Hassan Drame recorded his fourth career double-double with a career-high 19 points and 11 rebounds, while Daryl Banks III joined him in double figures scoring 13 points for Saint Peter’s.
Fairfield (9-10, 3-5 MAAC) – 69 | Marist (8-9, 3-5 MAAC) – 66

Fairfield scored the final four points of the game to knock-off Marist 69-66 on the road at McCann Arena. The Stags erased a one-point deficit with just over a minute left, to help end the team’s seven-game skid. Three Stags scored in double figures led by 17 points from Jake Wojcik, 16 points by Taj Benning, and 13 points from Supreme Cook. Marist was led by a game-high 19 points from Ricardo Wright and Samkelo Cele chipped in with 16 points.

Iona used a second half surge to topple Quinnipiac 76-61 at People’s United Center on Sunday. The Gaels outscored the Bobcats 43-28 in the second half after a tied game at halftime, leading to a perfect 8-0 MAAC record, the best start for Iona in program history. Tyson Jolly led all scorers with 20 points to lead the Gaels, while Elijah Joiner and Nelly Junior Joseph each scored 12 points. Dezi Jones led the Bobcats with 13 points, Luis Kortright chipped in with a season-high 12 points, and Kevin Marfo added 11 points.
Monmouth (12-6, 4-3 MAAC) – 78 | Manhattan (10-6, 3-4 MAAC) – 62

Monmouth used a dominant second half to defeat Manhattan 78-62 at OceanFirst Bank Center in West Long Branch, NJ. The Hawks, which never trailed in the game, won their second consecutive game and had five double digit scorers. The Monmouth starting lineup of Walker Miller (19), Marcus McClary (18), Shavar Reynolds (12), George Papas (10), and Nikkei Rutty (10) all scored in double figures. Manhattan was led by MAAC leading scorer Jose Perez’s 22 points, while Nick Brennen scored 13 points and Samir Stewart posted 10 points.
Rider (6-12, 2-6 MAAC) – 70 | Niagara (8-10, 3-6 MAAC) – 67

Rider snagged a 70-67 comeback victory over Niagara on the road at the Gallagher Center on Sunday. The Broncs used a 27-5 run to open the second half to erase a 17-point halftime deficit and snap a four-game losing streak. Rider’s starting five combined to score 66 points, with four of the five scoring in double figures led by 17 points each from Allen Powell and Mervin James, while Dimencio Vaughn and Dwight Murray, Jr. contributed 13 and 11 points respectively. Four Purple Eagles surpassed double digits with Sam Iorio leading the team with 14 points, the combo of Marcus Hammond and Jordan Cintron scoring 13 points apiece, and Justin Roberts adding 12 points.
