Niagara Takes Sole Possession of First-Place; Iona, Mount St. Mary’s, and Quinnipiac Claim First MAAC Wins Following Men’s Soccer Weekend Action

EDISON, NJ (Oct. 3, 2022) – Niagara University improved to 2-0, while Iona University, Mount St. Mary’s University, and Quinnipiac University each earned its first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) wins of the season. Niagara sits atop of the MAAC standings with 6 points with Manhattan College and Siena College tied for second-place with 4 points each, following a weekend draw.

The Iona University men's soccer team opened up its conference schedule with a 1-0 victory over the defending league champion Marist College at Mazzella Field on Saturday afternoon. The game’s lone goal came when Sergio Gonzalez Fernandez and Elird Mero connected on a pass in the box that found Frederik Johnson Oee, who played it off of his chest and buried a left-footed laser into the upper-right corner of the goal to give the Gaels a lead in the 16th minute. Marist led in shots 12-7, and both teams had five shots on target.

Mount St. Mary's used a pair of unanswered goals to defeat Canisius, 2-1, in Buffalo Saturday. The Mountaineers rallied, playing one man down to earn their first league victory in the MAAC. Canisius got on the board first, taking a 1-0 lead in the game's 33rd minute after freshman Daniel Longo redirected a corner-kick from teammate Jonny Tekie past Mount goalkeeper Ethan Russell. After a Mount player was sent off for a foul, the Mountaineers were left playing a man down for the rest of the contest. Moments later, the Mount responded with the equalizer when Raul Luna dribbled up the loose ball and deposited it in the upper left-hand corner of the net. In the 83rd minute, a foul in the box by Canisius allowed Ondrej Soukup to score the game-winning goal via a penalty kick to clinch the victory for Mount St. Mary’s.

Niagara defeated Saint Peter's 2-0 Saturday evening in MAAC men's soccer action from Niagara Field. The Purple Eagles improved to 2-0 with the win, taking sole possession of first place in the men’s soccer standings with a league-best 6 points. Niagara opened the scoring in the 17th minute of play when Gabriel Mikina found the back of the net following a Niagara throw in and assist from Rodrigo Almeida. In the 57th minute, Mikina scored his second tally of the game, putting the Purple Eagles ahead 2-0. The Peacocks registered five shots with Tom Climpson and Marco Torino each recording two.

Quinnipiac men's soccer beat in-state MAAC rival Fairfield, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon. In a back and forth affair, the Bobcats used a late man down goal from Jason Budhai to secure their first league victory of the season. Quinnipiac struck first in the 20th minute when Domen Bozic forced a Fairfield turnover and took control of the ball before dribbling the ball just outside the box and firing a shot into the back of the net. Fairfield tied the game at 1-1 in the 33rd minute when Thomas Drillien managed to collect a loose ball after a cross to the center of the box and put the ball on target and past the goalkeeper. Early in the second half, Alexander Stjerngaard got the return pass from Jared Smith at the top of the box and Stjerngaard sent in a shot to give the Bobcats a one goal lead again. The Stags would then respond, this time in the 67th minute as Raz Amir and Lenni Mierow combined to set up a play that provided the ball into the center of the box where Alex Oliveira managed to volley a shot to the far post that brought the score to 2-2. The game-deciding goal occurred in the 72nd minute with Stjerngaard sending a pass to a streaking Budhai who ran the ball down into the box before sending the ball past the Fairfield keeper.

In a defensive battle, Manhattan and Siena played to a 0-0 scoreless draw Saturday afternoon in MAAC play, each earning 1 point. Both sides also remain unbeaten in MAAC action following the draw, as each moved into a tie for second place with 4 points and an identical 1-0-1 record. Manhattan posted a 4-3 shots on goal edge, while Siena won the shots battle (9-7). Siena goalkeeper Greg Monroe recorded four saves in his 13th career shutout and Manhattan keeper Danny DiMarco made three stops, extending his shutout streak to three matches.
 
The 2022 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship will take place from November 6 through 13. The six-team, single-elimination championship will be hosted by the higher seed of each match. The opening round will take place on Sunday, November 6, followed by the semifinals on Thursday, November 10, and concluding with the championship match on Sunday, November 13.
