EDISON, NJ (Dec. 5, 2022) – Sunday’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball action was headlined by league wins for Iona University and Niagara University, while Marist College earned a non-conference victory in London. The Gaels knocked off Canisius, improving to 2-0 in the MAAC, the Purple Eagles got past Quinnipiac on the road to improve to 1-1, and the Red Foxes edged Maine in the Basketball Hall of Fame London Showcase.

For the second straight game, Iona won convincingly, defeating Canisius 90-60 in MAAC play at the Hynes Center on Sunday. The win was the largest for the Gaels in MAAC play since 2018 and the team extended their home winning streak to 18 games following the victory. Trailing by three, the Gaels used a 33-13 run over the final 13 minutes of the first half to take over the contest. The win puts Iona alone at the top of the men’s basketball league standings with a 2-0 mark following the opening week of conference play, while Canisius drops to 0-2. Seven different Gaels scored seven or more points led by a 21-points from sophomore Walter Clayton Jr., while Berrick JeanLouis added 16 points, Nelly Junior Joseph posted 12 points, and Daniss Jenkins netted 10 points. Canisius was led by redshirt-freshman Tahj Staveskie’s 13 points, while Jamir Moultrie added 11 points and Jacco Fritz had a 10 point, 13 rebound double-double.

Niagara earned a 64-60 road win over Quinnipiac on Sunday afternoon in MAAC men's basketball action from M&T Bank Arena. The Purple Eagles improved to 1-1 splitting their opening MAAC weekend, while the Bobcats dropped to 0-1 in their lone MAAC game of the opening week. Noah Thomasson reached the 20-point plateau for the third time this season, scoring a game-high 24 points and Aaron Gray added 14 points for Niagara in the win, with the duo combining to hit eight triples (four apiece). Quinnipiac had a trio in double figures; Tyrese Williams led the Bobcats with a season-high 18 points, Ike Nweke added 15 points and nine rebounds, and Dezi Jones scored 12 points.

The Marist men's basketball team came back to defeat Maine, 62-61, in the Basketball Hall of Fame London Showcase on Sunday at O2 Arena in London, England. The Red Foxes trailed by six with 2:49 to play, but they outscored Maine 9-2 the rest of the way and did not allow a field goal during the stretch. Patrick Gardner finished with 27 points, nine rebounds, two blocked shots, and a steal to lead the Red Foxes. Defensively, Marist held Maine to .188 (3-for-16) shooting from three-point range, and .421 (24-for-57) from the field. The Red Foxes improve to 3-0 all-time in Europe, after also going 2-0 in the Belfast Classic in 2018.
