ATLANTIC CITY, NJ (March 8, 2022) – Action officially tipped off at the 2022 Hercules Tires Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Women’s Basketball Championship on Tuesday with three games. No. 8 Iona College, No. 7 Saint Peter’s University, and No.11 Canisius College all earned wins to advance to the quarterfinal round.
No. 8 Iona – 74 | No. 9 Rider – 58

Iona earned a 74-58 win over Rider in the opening game of the tournament. Trailing by one-point after the first quarter, the Gaels used a dominating 25-12 second quarter and never looked back, taking a 40-28 lead into the locker room. The Gaels were led on the day by Juana Camilion, who scored a game-high 21 points, and added a team-best seven assists and four steals. Shyan Mwai and Ketsia Athias also scored in double-figures, adding 16 and 12 points, respectively. Rider’s duo of Jessika Schiffer (19) and Makayla Firebaugh (13), combined to score 32 points for the Broncs. Iona advances to the quarterfinals for the second straight season. The Gaels will meet top-seeded Fairfield on Wednesday, March 9 and 1pm in the quarters.
No. 7 Saint Peter’s – 49 | No. 10 Marist – 29

A rematch of the 2021 Championship game, Saint Peter’s held off defending champion Marist 49-29 in the second game of the day. In what was a defensive battle, the Peacocks led for almost 38 minutes, and held the Red Foxes to under 20 percent shooting from the floor and under five percent shooting from beyond the arc. Kendrea Williams and Kaila Dawkins scored 10 points each to lead Saint Peter’s, while Sky Castro scored nine and pulled in 19 total rebounds. Kendall Krick was the lone player for the Red Foxes to score in double-digits, posting 10 points as well. This marks the second consecutive season Saint Peter’s will play in the quarters. The Peacock’s next opponent will be No. 2 Quinnipiac on Wednesday at 3:30pm.
No. 11 Canisius – 71 | No. 6 Monmouth – 65

In the biggest upset of the day, 11th seeded Canisius knocked off the sixth seed, Monmouth 71-65. With the win, the Golden Griffins became the first ever 11 seed in the women’s field to win a game at the tournament. The game remained tight throughout, and it wasn’t until midway through the fourth quarter when the Griffs were able to pull away and take a nine-point advantage. Canisius’ win was spearheaded by Dani Haskell’s game-high 26 points. Shaunae Brown scored 14 points and Athina Lexa posted 10 in the victory. The Hawks quartet of Stella Clark (19), Lucy Thomas (16), Jen Louro (10), and Brianna Livingston (10) led Monmouth in the game. This is the Griffs first trip to the quarterfinal round since last making an appearance in 2019. Canisius will meet No. 3 Manhattan on Thursday, March 10 and 12pm in the quarterfinals.
