Iona’s Young and Canisius’ Steffan Named Hercules Tires MAAC Student-Athletes of the Week

EDISON, NJ (April 13, 2022) – Iona’s Carly Young and Canisius’ Mike Steffan have been named the Hercules Tires Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Student-Athletes of the Week.

In the win over Niagara on Saturday, Young held one of the MAAC’s top scorers who was averaging 5.25 points per game in conference play to just one point over the 60 minutes. In the first half of the Gaels’ game against Monmouth, Young held the Hawks top scorer to zero points in the first half. Through 13 games this season, the New Hampshire native has recorded 11 ground balls and five caused turnovers.

Steffan is batting .337 on the season in 24 games, all of which have been starts. The Williamsville, N.Y., native has six home runs and 31 RBI, both figures already being career highs for the graduate student. Last weekend in a three-game sweep of Iona, Steffan batted .714 with two home runs and nine RBI, while drawing five walks and stealing three bases. The three-time MAAC All-Academic Team selection is currently pursuing his master’s degree in finance after receiving his bachelor’s degree in finance from Canisius.
