FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fresh off one of the most historic performances in program history, Fairfield University Baseball pitcher Jake Noviello was named a Collegiate Baseball Newspaper National Player of the Week following his perfect game on Sunday. Noviello retired all 21 hitters he faced in the seven-inning 10-0 win which represented the first perfect game in program history and just the fourth no-hitter.
"I stepped on the mound yesterday just looking to give the team a quality start," Noviello said. "As a pitcher, it's very comforting knowing that your team can score 10 plus runs for you, so my main goal was to throw strikes and get ahead of the hitters. We are really coming together as a team and yesterday was a great example of everyone doing their job to the best of their ability."
"I'm very happy for Jake for throwing a perfect game after everything he has been through the last year," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "Coming back from a near career-ending injury so we are all very excited for Jake coming through. He works very hard is very deserving of this honor."
Noviello needed just 71 pitches to accomplish history as he accounted for 11 flyouts, six groundouts, and four strikeouts during his perfect performance. He had just one three-ball count and also made the best defensive play of the game as he snagged a line drive right back up the middle.
A Collegiate Baseball News Preseason All-American Second Team selection, Noviello earned his third win of the season and the 13th of his career. An All-Region selection and an All-MAAC First Team honoree last season, Noviello spent the offseason rehabbing from shoulder surgery that sidelined him during the summer and fall months.
The Stags now sit 12-3 in the conference and atop of the MAAC standings with their .800 winning percentage. The team is back in action for a pair of midweek games starting on Tuesday at 3:30pm at Sacred Heart.
