CORAL GABLES, FL (June 2, 2022) – The 2022 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Baseball Champions, the Canisius College Golden Griffins (29-23, 15-9 MAAC) are preparing for the Coral Gables Regional and are set to take on sixth overall seed, the University of Miami Hurricanes (39-18, 20-10 ACC) in the NCAA Regionals tomorrow, June 4 at 12 pm on ESPN+.
Canisius earned the MAAC’s automatic qualifying bid after capturing the 2022 MAAC Baseball Championship title on Sunday. They were placed in the elusive field of 64 during the NCAA selection show on Monday.
The Regional of the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship is a double-elimination tournament between four teams, with the winner of each regional moving on to compete in a Super Regional. Competing in the Coral Gables Regional is Canisius, the University of Arizona, the University of Miami, and the University of Mississippi (Ole Miss), which will take place at Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field.
The Griffs earned the third seed in the 2022 MAAC Baseball Championships and swept through the tournament, going 4-0 including two run-rule victories in the first two games. The Griffs used their strong offense all season to power their way to victory. Canisius earned four All-MAAC First Team selections: Mike DeStefano, Matt Duffy, Mike Steffan, and 2022 MAAC Player of the Year Max Grant.
Grant is currently ranked 10
th in the country with a .404 batting average. He also hit 10 home runs, scored 55 runs, and drove in 52 RBI. Grant also led the MAAC with 88 hits, which ranks third all-time for a single season in Canisius history. He is four hits shy of breaking Connor Panas’ record of 92 hits in 2015. Grant also earned All-Championship Team honors.
On the mound, the Griffs are led by ace Matt Duffy who not only earned All-MAAC First Team honors, but also earned the 2022 MAAC Championship Most Outstanding Player award. In the MAAC Championship last week, Duffy threw 10.1 innings, surrendering just six hits and one run, while striking out 11 batters in his two appearances. Duffy earned two wins last week to improve his season record to 8-2 and lower his ERA to 3.67.
Duffy is also just six strikeouts shy of breaking current Seattle Mariners' and former Niagara pitcher Matt Brash for most strikeouts in a single season in MAAC history (121). Duffy currently has 116 strikeouts and will likely get the start either tomorrow or Saturday.
Duffy and Grant were joined on the All-Championship Team by DeStefano, Trevor Henneman, and Gibson Krzeminski.
Canisius advances to the NCAA Regional for the fourth time in program history and second time under fifth year Head Coach Matt Mazurek who also earned a trip in 2018 to the Minneapolis Regional.
The Griffs will be met by the University of Miami who earned five total All-ACC First and Second Team selections this season including First Teamers Carson Palmquist and Andrew Walters.
Miami is no stranger to the NCAA postseason with 2022 marking the Canes 48
th trip in program history to a regional, going 129-50 all-time in regional play. The Canes have gone on to make 25 College World Series appearances and win four national championships (1982, 1985, 1999, 2001).
The winner of the meeting between Canisius and Miami will take on the winner of Arizona and Ole Miss for a chance to go to the Coral Gables Regional Final.
