Two Former MAAC Pitchers Selected in 2022 MLB Draft

EDISON, NJ (July 20, 2022) – The 2022 Major League Baseball (MLB) Draft concluded on Wednesday evening and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) had two selections this year: Monmouth’s Trey Dombroski and Rob Hensey. The 20-round draft took place from June 17-19.
 
Dombroski was the first MAAC selection this year as the Houston Astros made him their fourth-round selection, 133rd overall.  Dombroski is the conference’s highest selection since the San Diego Padres picked Niagara’s Matt Brash in the fourth round, 113th overall in 2019.
 
Dombroski was the MAAC Pitcher of the Year in 2022 after going 6-2 this past season with a 3.13 ERA. The southpaw struck out 120 batters this season, tied for the third most in MAAC history. Dombroski only surrendered 14 walks in 95 innings this season. MLB.com Draft and Prospect expert Jonathan Mayo said on Dombroski, “I really like this guy…fills up the strike zone… maybe the best control in the draft.”
 
The Cincinnati Reds selected Monmouth left-hander Rob Hensey with their ninth-round pick, 273rd overall. Hensey, the 2021 MAAC Pitcher of the Year went 14-13 for his career with a 3.24 ERA. He tallied 215 career strikeouts in 211 innings including 102 this past season, the 11th most in a single season in MAAC history.
 
While the 2022 MLB Draft has concluded, several MAAC baseball student-athletes can still be signed to professional contracts in the next few weeks.
