Second Half Success Leads to Victories for Fairfield and Siena; Canisius and Rider Earn Draws in MAAC Men’s Soccer Weekend Action

EDISON, NJ (Sep. 19, 2022) – Siena College earned its second straight clean sheet and Fairfield University used a pair of second half goals for wins, while both Canisius College and Rider University earned draws, to cap off Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s soccer weekend action. The Saints continue their best start to a season since 2014 and remain atop of the MAAC standings following the weekend.

Mount St. Mary's fought hard for a scoreless draw at the break, but Penn's offense found gaps in the second half on the way to handing the Mount a 5-0 defeat Friday at Waldron Family Stadium. The Mountaineers finished the contest with four shots, one of which went on goal. Ruben Kiers gave the Mount their best opportunity with a laser at the net in the 60th minute. Goalkeeper Ethan Russell finished with seven saves for Mount St. Mary’s.

The Fairfield University men's soccer team closed out the home portion of its 2022 non-conference schedule by edging Princeton University by a 3-1 score at Lessing Field. The Stags used a pair of second-half goals to propel the team to victory. Both teams scored their first tallies on unfortunate own goals. Fairfield would break the tie in the 63rd minute Viggo after Sjoberg sent a perfectly timed ball into the box, allowing Rasmus Sorenesen Rejnhold to rise above his defender and redirect the ball into the corner of the goal. The Stags put the game away in the 77th minute when Raz Amir sent a cross into the center of the box where Thomas Drillien was waiting for a quick release that beat the goalkeeper low and wide.

Siena men's soccer earned a 2-0 road decision at Merrimack on Saturday evening at Martone-Mejail Field in North Andover, Massachusetts. The Saints continue their best start to a season since 2014, are unbeaten through the last three games, and have back-to-back shutout wins for the first time in non-conference play since 2014. Graduate student goalkeeper Greg Monroe recording a remarkable 10 first-half saves, and finished the day tying his career-mark with 11 stops. Siena got in front early in the second half, with junior Junior Kone finishing off a pass from sophomore Jacob Sandun Arachchige-Jensen with a top-shelf strike from the box in the 57th minute. Siena would later use a set piece as insurance, with sophomore Erik Reis dishing a left-side corner to junior Bilal Hersi, who finished inside the six.

Niagara fell to Cornell, 2-1 on Saturday night. In the 20th minute, the Big Red would score the game's first goal. Moments later Niagara's Asher Barnes would even the score with his first goal of the season on an assist by Jordan Acevedo in the 21st minute. Late in the match, Cornell would score the game-winner in the 86th minute to secure the win. Jamie Barry made a career-high 10 saves for the Purple Eagles.

Quinnipiac men's soccer fell at Harvard, 3-1, on the road at Jordan Field in Cambridge, Massachusetts on Saturday. Harvard went up 3-0 against the Bobcats before Sam McCann was able to get Quinnpiac on the board in the 82nd minute, scoring off the assist from Sander Sonsterud. The Bobcats outshot the Crimson 25-13, led by eight shots from Tomas Svecula.

The Saint Peter's University men's soccer team lost to UMBC 3-0 on Saturday night. Peacock graduate goalkeeper Guillem Badenes Mecho made five saves in the game. Offensively, Saint Peter’s was led by a pair of shots from Mikkel Fodstad and Teodor Linn.

The Rider University men's soccer team played NJIT to a 2-2 tie in its home-opener on Sunday evening at Ben Cohen Field. Both teams alternated goals in the contest with Rider earning the first tally by way of an NJIT own goal in the 11th minute. NJIT would score the equalizer one minute later in the 12th minute. The Broncs would take a 2-1 lead into the second half, with Mo Bocher finishing on a back-heel flick in front following Jack McGeechan's cross from left-to-right to Lenny Cidolit at the right post, before Cidolit re-centered in front to Bocher for the score. NJIT would again respond with a goal in the 65th minute to force the draw.
 
The 2022 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship will take place from November 6 through 13. The six-team, single-elimination championship will be hosted by the higher seed of each match. The opening round will take place on Sunday, November 6, followed by the semifinals on Thursday, November 10, and concluding with the championship match on Sunday, November 13.
