Fairfield, Manhattan, Marist, Niagara, and Siena Earn Conference Opening Day Wins in MAAC Men’s Soccer on Wednesday

EDISON, NJ (Sep. 29, 2022) – Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s soccer conference action opened on Wednesday with a slate full of games. Fairfield University, Manhattan College, Marist College, Niagara University, and Siena College each came away with wins to start the league season with 3 points.

Fairfield University men's soccer team opened the MAAC schedule with a 1-0 win over Mount St. Mary's at Lessing Field. In the 49th minute of action, Raz Amir recovered a lost ball and sent a shot to the upper corner, deflecting off the goalkeeper's outstretched hands and caroming into the back of the net. Over an eight-minute span beginning in the 55th minute, Fairfield goalkeeper James Anderson was tested on three occasions as Mount St. Mary's worked to equalize. Jesus Salazar got the first shot-on-goal, which was saved by Anderson. Follow-ups from Gavin Watt and Ruben Kiers were also denied by Anderson. One last attempt by Ondrej Soukup in the 82nd minute found Anderson in the center of the goal.

Manhattan men’s soccer picked up a 3-0 clean sheet road win at Rider to kick off MAAC play. The three goals were a season-high for the Jaspers in the victory. Manhattan struck first in the 24th minute courtesy of the foot of Ronaldo Da Silva off a pass from Omar Torres. In the 53rd minute, Gunnar Studenhofft beat the Broncs’ keeper to the ball off a pass and tapped it past him to Da Silva for his second tally of the game, giving the Jaspers a 2-0 lead. Johan Velez would add the third and final goal for Manhattan on the 60th minute. Five Broncs registered a shot, with Lenny Cidolit and Mo Bocher putting one shot apiece on goal.

Marist men's soccer defeated Saint Peter's to start conference play on Wednesday night by a score of 4-0 in Poughkeepsie, NY. The Red Foxes’ four goals were the highest of the season. Early in the first half a corner kick from Jacob Schulman found Henrique Cruz on the back post, resulting in the first goal of the game for Marist (15th minute). The Red Foxes started the second half strong, scoring in the 46th minute. Cruz assisted Richard Morel to extend the lead to 2-0. Then in the 52nd minute, Liam Salmon connected for his first goal of the season, which made the score 3-0. Extending the Red Foxes lead again, Jonathan Salguero scored his first goal of the season in the 74th minute of action. The Peacocks registered six shots with one on goal coming from Tim Strele.

Niagara men’s soccer earned a 2-0 win over Battle of the Bridge rival Canisius Wednesday night in downtown Buffalo. The Purple Eagles scored goals in each half to secure their fourth straight win over the Griffs in the rivalry. Ali Alomari cut across the 18-yard box before rifling a shot into the lower left-hand portion of the net for the Purple Eagles' first goal of the contest in the 34th minute. Stephen Hasse would give Niagara a 2-0 lead in the 54th minute after scrambling for a loose ball in front of the Canisius net. Ely Sidibe, Kodie Sarkodie, and Daniel Longo each recorded two shots to lead Canisius.

Siena men’s soccer edged Quinnipiac 2-1 to kick off the MAAC schedule for both sides in Loudonville on Wednesday. The victory for the Saints over the Bobcats was the first for head coach Graciano Brito over his alma mater and first time Siena has topped Quinnipiac since 2015. Siena wasted got out in front when junior Bilal Hersi guiding a feed down the left sideline to cross to sophomore Zach Gardner, who finished for his third goal of the year in the second minute of play. Quinnipiac responded in the early part of the second half, when Alexander Stjerngaard forced a turnover after a pass from the Saints, and passed it to Erik Langwagen who dribbled into the box and found David Bercedo in the middle of the box for the equalizer. The Saints grabbed the lead for good just over five minutes later, with Storodegard working a thru ball through multiple defenders and finally the goalkeeper to notch game-winning tally in the 63rd minute.
 
The 2022 MAAC Men's Soccer Championship will take place from November 6 through 13. The six-team, single-elimination championship will be hosted by the higher seed of each match. The opening round will take place on Sunday, November 6, followed by the semifinals on Thursday, November 10, and concluding with the championship match on Sunday, November 13.
