Canisius, Fairfield, Marist, Quinnipiac, and Rider Secure Victories in MAAC Men’s Basketball on Sunday

EDISON, NJ (Jan. 16, 2023) – Sunday’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball league play ended in fireworks, as the day was headlined by Canisius College upsetting unbeaten Siena College and Rider University ending Iona University’s 21-game home winning streak.  Additionally, Fairfield University, Marist College, and Quinnipiac University, scored road wins on the afternoon to cap off the day.

Canisius upset previously unbeaten Siena, 66-62, in MAAC men's basketball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. The win moved the Golden Griffins to 3-5 in MAAC play, while the Saints, who entered the game riding a seven-game win streak, slipped to 6-1 in league play with the defeat. The two sides played even throughout the early portion of the opening half, accounting for four times. With 6:51 left in the first, the Golden Griffins would take the lead for good, and hold the advantage for the final 27 minutes, going ahead by as many as 14 points. Tre Dinkins came off the bench and scored a career-high 18 points to go with six rebounds, George Maslennikov posted a career-high with 14 points, and TJ Gadsden was good for 11 points to lead Canisius. Three Siena players posted double-figures, led by a career-high 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots from Michael Baer, while Javion McCollum chipped in 13 points and Jackson Stormo added 12 points.

Fairfield topped Saint Peter's 56-52 on Sunday afternoon in Jersey City, NJ in MAAC action. The Stags earn their first season sweep over the Peacocks in 10 years and improve to 3-4 in MAAC play, while the Peacocks fall to 2-7 in league play this year. Saint Peter’s held a seven point lead at the break (31-24), but Fairfield only surrendered 21 points in the second half while scoring 32 of its own to lead to the road win. Defensively, the Stags limited the Peacocks to 27.6 percent shooting from the field and 12.5 percent from long distance. Jake Wojcik scored a game-high 17 points, Supreme Cook posted 12 points and eight rebounds and Allan Jeanne-Rose stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, four rebounds, three assists and four blocked shots. Saint Peter's was led by 13 points from Isiah Dasher and 12 by Jayden Saddler.

Marist used a game-winning field goal in the final seconds to knock off Niagara, 66-64 on the road in a MAAC men’s basketball conference matchup Sunday afternoon. The win gave the Red Foxes a sweep of the Western New York trip for the second time in program history, improving to 3-4 in the MAAC following their third straight win. The Purple Eagles drop their third in a row and MAAC record sits at an even 4-4. Patrick Gardner hit a baseline jumper with 6.8 seconds remaining, which proved to be the game-winner for Marist. In addition to the game-winner, Gardner finished with 31 points and scored the Red Foxes final nine points in the game. Kam Farris also added 18 points in the victory. The Purple Eagles were led by Noah Thomasson who finished with 19 points, seven rebounds and nine assists; Aaron Gray added 16 points and Lance Erving contributed 11 in the loss.
 
Quinnipiac (14-5, 5-3 MAAC) – 58 | Mount St. Mary’s (6-12, 2-5 MAAC) – 51

Quinnipiac pulled away late, earning a 58-51 victory over Mount St. Mary's at Knott Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Bobcats battled to a fifth consecutive MAAC win, jumping to a 5-3 mark, while the Mountaineers MAAC record falls to 2-5. Quinnipiac outscored the Mount 35-27 in the second half of play, and connected on six 3-pointers over the final 20 minutes to earn the road win. Dezi Jones led the Bobcats with 12 points and five assists, Matt Balanc added 11 points and five rebounds, and Paul Otieno chipped in with 10 points and six rebounds. Dakota Leffew scored a game-high 18 points while Jedy Cordilia chipped in his first collegiate double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds, and Deandre Thomas added 11 points for the Mount in the game.
 
Rider (7-9, 4-3 MAAC) – 70 | Iona (12-6, 5-2 MAAC) – 67

Rider erased an 18-point second-half deficit to defeat Iona, 70-67, Sunday afternoon on the road at Hynes Athletic Center. The win snapped a three-game losing skid for the Broncs, who own a 4-3 MAAC record and the Gaels fall to 5-2 in the MAAC. Rider also snapped Iona’s 21-game home winning streak with the win, handing the Gaels their first home defeat since 2021. Iona led 40-28 at the break, and extended its lead to 18 points early in the second half. Over the next 10 minutes, Rider outscored Iona 23-5 and knotted the score at 54-54 with 7:39 to play. With less than four seconds remaining, Dwight Murray, Jr. hit the game-winning three-pointer to knock off the Gaels. Murray scored a game-high 22 points, to go along with 15 points from Mervin James to lead the Broncs. For the Gaels, Nelly Junior Joseph posted a team-high 18 points and 13 rebounds, Daniss Jenkins scored 16 points, Berrick JeanLouis added 13 points, and Cruz Davis contributed 10.
