Fairfield, Mount St. Mary’s, Niagara, Quinnipiac and Rider Score Victories on Sunday Afternoon in MAAC Men’s Basketball League Play

EDISON, NJ (Jan. 23, 2023) – Another weekend of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball concluded on Sunday afternoon with a full slate of games. Fairfield University used a second-half offensive explosion to defeat top ranked Siena College on the road, while Mount St. Mary’s, Quinnipiac University, and Rider University won at home and Niagara University grabbed a road win.

Fairfield used an offensive outburst in the second half to knock off first-place Siena, 62-52, at MVP Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Stags posted their lowest-scoring half of the season in the opening frame, then followed up with their highest-scoring half in the second half to score the upset road win, their first in Albany since 2018. Fairfield’s MAAC record improves to 5-4 while the Saints, who remain atop of the MAAC standings, fall to 7-2. At halftime, Siena led Fairfield 20-15 with the teams combining to score 35 points, the fewest points in a half by both sides this season. Inversely, the second half produced a combined 79 points as the Stags outscored the Saints 47-32 in the second stanza. Supreme Cook scored a team-best 12 points for Fairfield, while Caleb Fields had 11 points and TJ Long was the third Stag in double figures with 10 points. Andrew Platek was the lone Saint in double figures, scoring a game-high 15 points.

Mount St. Mary's topped Marist, 59-55, in a MAAC league game on Sunday afternoon in Emmitsburg, MD. The Mountaineers snapped their four-game losing streak and the Red Foxes dropped their second straight, as both team’s MAAC records sit at 3-6 on the season. The Mount led for more than 80 percent of the contest, holding the advantage for 33:23 compared to 1:33 for Marist. The Mount starting lineup of Jalen Benjamin (15), Jedy Cordilia (13), George Tinsley (12), Dakota Leffew (10), and Deandre Thomas (9) combined to score all of the team’s 59 points in the victory. Marist was led in scoring by a game-high 17 points from Patrick Gardner and 14 points from Noah Harris.

Niagara captured a 59-57 win over Saint Peter's on the road Sunday afternoon in Jersey City, NJ in MAAC play. The win ends a four-game losing streak for the Purple Eagles and the team’s record improves to 5-5 in the MAAC, while the Peacocks fall to 3-8 in the MAAC. Niagara senior guard Noah Thomasson hit the game winner with nine seconds remaining in the contest to secure Niagara’s first road win over SPU since 2017. Thomasson recorded his 10th 20-point game of the season to lead Niagara and Sam Iorio finished with 15 points. Saint Peter’s quartet of Jaylen Murray (16), Isiah Dasher (12), Corey Washington (10) and Jayden Saddler (10) combined to score 50 points to lead the Peacocks.
 
Quinnipiac (15-5, 6-3 MAAC) – 87 | Canisius (5-14, 3-7 MAAC) – 82

Quinnipiac's outlasted Canisius, 87-82, on Sunday afternoon at M&T Bank Arena in MAAC action. The sixth consecutive victory for the Bobcats moves them to a MAAC-best overall record of 15-5 and third-best conference record of 6-3. The Golden Griffins fall to 3-7 on the year in the MAAC. In a meeting that featured 22 lead changes and 10 ties, Quinnipiac used a 17-6 run over the final six minutes of the half to take a commanding 42-31 lead into the locker room. Canisius mounted a 19-6 response early in the second half to knot the game at 50-50, before taking a 57-52 advantage. Down the stretch, the Bobcats outscored the Griffs 15-8 to steal the home win. Five Bobcats posted double-figure scoring totals led by a career-high 24 points by Ike Nweke and a double-double by Paul Otieno of 14 points, 10 rebounds. Luis Kortright recorded 11 points, Dezi Jones chipped in with 10 points and Matt Balanc added 10 points for Quinnpiac. Canisius was led by TJ Gadsden who scored a career-high 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Tre Dinkins also scored a career-best of 19 points, while Jordan Henderson and Jacco Fritz scored 12 points each for the Griffs.
 
Rider (9-9, 6-3 MAAC) – 67 | Manhattan (6-12, 4-5 MAAC) – 65

Rider held off Manhattan, 67-65, in a MAAC meeting on Sunday afternoon at Alumni Gym in Lawrenceville, NJ. The third straight win for the Broncs improves their MAAC mark to 6-3, while the Jaspers fall to 4-5 in the MAAC. The back and forth affair featured 17 lead changes and 14 ties, with the Jaspers leading for 20:05 of game time and the Broncs leading for 11:17. Mervin James led Rider with a team-high 16 points, Allen Bertrand finished with 12 points, and Tariq Ingraham added 10 points. For Manhattan, Josh Roberts led all scorers with a game-high 18 points on a perfect 7-of-7 shooting from the field, while Samir Stewart and Marques Watson finished with 12 points each.
