EDISON, NJ (Jan. 30, 2023) – All four victorious teams on Sunday either overcame deficits of double-figures or trailed late before stealing wins in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball league action. Iona University erased a 17-point halftime deficit, Manhattan College overcame a late eight-point hole, and both Rider University and Siena College came back from down 10 at some point, to all win their respective contests.

Iona earned a 78-72 comeback win over Quinnipiac in MAAC action on Sunday at the Hynes Center. The Gaels erased an 18-point first half deficit, en route to snapping the Bobcats six-game winning streak. Iona improved to 7-3 in the MAAC on the season and Quinnipiac dropped to 6-4 in the conference following the game. The Bobcats jumped out to a 17-2 early lead in the game and held a controlling 45-28 lead at the break. Iona flipped the script in the second half, running off nine straight to start the half, before ultimately going on a 19-1 run to take its largest lead of 62-53 with a little under seven minutes to play. The Bobcats would never get closer than three points for the remainder of the contest. Walter Clayton Jr. led four Gaels in double-figures, posting 17 points while going a perfect 6-for-6 from the line. Nelly Junior Joseph recorded his ninth straight and 13
th total double-double of the season with 15 points and 11 rebounds, Daniss Jenkins scored 15 points, and Cruz Davis added 13 points in the Iona win. For Quinnipiac, Dezi Jones scored a season-best 24 points, Matt Balanc chipped in with 12 points, and Luis Kortright added 11 points.

Manhattan rallied late to force overtime and defeat Canisius 81-74 on Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. The win ended the Jaspers three-game skid and improved the team to 5-6 in the league, while the Golden Griffins fell to 3-8 in MAAC games with their third-straight defeat. Manhattan trailed by eight with less than seven minutes to go and six with less than five minutes before scoring the final five points over the last 2:38 to tie the game at 68-68 and force OT. In the extra period, the Jaspers outscored the Griffs 10-3 to steal the road win. Ant Nelson had a game-high 22 points for Manhattan and surpassed 1,000 career points in the victory, while Josh Roberts, Samir Stewart, and Nick Brennen accounted 16 points each. Four Griffs scored in double-figures, led by Jordan Henderson who posted 22 points, followed by a 17 point, 10 rebound double-double by Xzavier Long, and 11 points each from Tre Dinkins and Tahj Staveskie.

Rider overcame a 10-point deficit and forced overtime at the buzzer before getting past Fairfield, 78-69, Sunday afternoon at Leo D. Mahoney Arena. The Broncs earned its fifth-straight win and improved to 8-3 in the MAAC and the Stags had their four-game winning streak snapped, falling to 6-5 in the league. On the final possession of the game, Rider missed on its first two opportunities but Allen Powell collected a third offensive rebound for the Broncs and got a mid-range jumper off at the buzzer to force overtime. Powell followed that up by scoring the first seven overtime points for Rider who outscored Fairfield 13-4 in extra period to seal the win. Dwight Murray Jr. scored a team-high 18 points, Powell finished with 16, Ajiri Ogemuno-Johnson added 15 points and eight rebounds, and Mervin James scored 14 points to lead Rider. Supreme Cook led the Stags with his sixth double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds. Fairfield also had TJ Long (13), Jalen Leach (12), and Allan Jeanne-Rose (10) score in double figures.

Siena knocked off MAAC rival Marist, 70-55, at McCann Arena on Sunday. The Saints overcame a quick 10-point hole to improve to 9-2 in the MAAC, their best start to the league season in 13 years. The Red Foxes dropped to 3-8 on the MAAC season following the defeat. Marist jumped out to a quick 11-1 lead over Siena, holding the Saints without a field goal over the first seven minutes of action. Siena would eventually shake the slow start and go on an 8-0 run and connect on six straight field goals to take the lead. Siena would put together a decisive 16-3 run down the stretch to pull away in the game. Jared Billups scored a career-high 24 points, Killian Gribben dropped a career-high 12 points on a perfect 4-4 shooting, Jackson Stormo added 12 points and Andrew Platek chipped in with 11 points to lead the Saints. Patrick Gardner had team highs of 18 points and seven rebounds for Marist and Kam Farris contributed 14 points.
