EDISON, NJ (Jan. 9, 2023) – Siena College took sole possession of first-place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) men’s basketball standings following Sunday afternoon’s league action. Additionally, Canisius College won its second straight road game, Manhattan College snapped Niagara University’s winning streak, Marist College picked up its first league win of the season and Quinnipiac University scored an upset win over previously unbeaten Iona University.

Canisius knocked off Saint Peter’s, 67-60, in overtime at Run Baby Run Arena in Jersey City, NJ on Sunday. The Golden Griffins capped off a 2-0 weekend with back-to-back road wins and improve to 2-4 in the MAAC while the Peacocks fall to 2-5 in the conference. Canisius led by as many as 11 points in the second half before the Saint Peter’s battled back and eventually knotted the contest at 54-54, sending the game into overtime. The Peacocks took a four-point lead to open the extra period but the Griffs would outscore Saint Peter’s 13-2 the rest of the way to secure their second overtime win of the season. Five players scored in double-figures for Canisius led by a team-high 17 points by Jamir Moultrie. Also surpassing double-figures for the Griffs were Tahj Staveskie with 14 points, TJ Gadsden recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, and the duo of Xzavier Long and Jacco Fritz each scored 10 points. Saint Peter's had three players in double-figures, led by Isaiah Dasher’s game-high 19 points, while Jayden Saddler added 13 points and Jaylen Murray scored 11 points.

Manhattan claimed a 64-59 home win over Niagara on Sunday afternoon. The Jaspers snapped a three-game skid with the win, improving to 3-3 in the MAAC, while the loss for Niagara ended a four-game winning streak and dropped the Purple Eagles league record to 4-2. The seesaw meeting produced nine ties and five lead changes over the 40 minutes. Late in the game, Niagara took a one-point lead with three and a half minutes to play, before Manhattan scored the go-ahead bucket at the three minute mark. The Jaspers would score six of the final eight points to seal the victory. Ant Nelson scored a game-high 24 points to lead Manhattan, while Nick Brennen pitched in with 13 points and Josh Roberts added 11 points and seven rebounds. Noah Thomasson finished with a team-high 23 points for Niagara, surpassing the 20-point plateau for the ninth time this season.

Marist earned a 63-56 victory over Mount St. Mary's in MAAC men's basketball action at McCann Arena on Sunday afternoon. The Red Foxes used a dominating 40-28 second half to propel the squad to their first league win of the season, improving to 1-4, while the Mountaineers fall to 2-3 in the MAAC following the road setback. Patrick Gardner scored a game-high 23 points and had six rebounds to lead Marist and Kam Farris chipped in with 12 points in the win. Dakota Leffew scored a team-high 17 points to pace the Mountaineers in the game while Jalen Benjamin added 15 points.

Quinnipiac posted a dominating wire-to-wire 81-58 win over Iona on Sunday afternoon at M&T Bank Arena. With the win, the Bobcats move to a league-best overall record of 12-5 and have won three straight MAAC contests, improving to 3-3. The defeat was the first of the MAAC campaign for the Gaels, who fall to 4-1. Quinnipiac outscored Iona, 42-28 in the first half and then 39-30 in the second half while shooting 42.6 percent from the floor and knocking down eight triples. Dezi Jones paced the Bobcats with 23 points and nine rebounds, Paul Otieno recorded a double-double of 16 points, 13 rebounds, and Luis Kortright added 11 points and six assists in the lopsided affair. Four Gaels were in double-figures with Daniss Jenkins scoring a team-high 17 points, followed by 14 from Anton Brookshire, 13 by Cruz Davis and 10 by Nelly Junior Joseph in the loss.

Siena took sole possession of first place by way of a 68-63 victory over Rider at MVP Arena in Sunday. The Saints improve to a perfect 5-0 in the MAAC while the Broncs drop their third straight league game and fall to an even 3-3. Siena led the entire opening 20 minutes after beginning the game on a 7-0 run and held a 24-21 lead at halftime. Rider took its first lead of the game by way of a 6-0 run to start the second half but Siena countered with a 13-2 run to take the lead for good with 12 minutes left in the game. Jackson Stormo scored a season-high 24 points to lead the Saints and Michael Baer scored 10 points and grabbed six rebounds off the bench to help power Siena to its sixth straight win. Dwight Murray, Jr. scored a team-high 20 points, becoming Rider's 41
st 1,000-point scorer in program history, while Tariq Ingraham added 12 points.
