EDISON, NJ (July 19, 2023) – Fairfield University’s baseball All-American, Charlie Pagliarini and Siena College’s MAAC Champion runner, Olivia Lomascolo have been selected as the 2022-23 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Student-Athletes of the Year, announced today by the league office.
Pagliarini becomes Fairfield’s first ever MAAC Male Student-Athlete of the Year and the program’s fourth overall honoree, joining three previous Female Student-Athlete of the Year winners (Melissa Santos – 2001-02, Ahna Johnson – 2008-09, Megan Theiller – 2017-18). Lomascolo is the second MAAC Female Student-Athlete of the Year from Siena, the institution’s first recipient since Liz Hubbard in 2005-06.
“Congratulations to Charlie and Olivia for being named the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference’s Student-Athletes of the Year,” said MAAC Commissioner, Travis Tellitocci. “Their outstanding contributions and impact during their time on campus have left an indelible mark on the conference. We’re proud of their outstanding achievements and wish them the best of luck in their future endeavors!”
The two honorees exemplified the MAAC mantra of excellence in academics. Pagliarini earned his degree from Fairfield in Management, posting a 3.7 cumulative grade point average. Lomascolo recorded a 3.6 GPA after graduating from Siena’s Dual Degree Nursing Program, achieving a perfect 4.0 in both semesters during the 2022-23 academic year.
Hailing from Trumbull, Connecticut, Pagliarini manufactured one of the best campaigns in MAAC and Fairfield history during 2023, setting the MAAC single season record for runs batted in with his 97 RBI, while also hitting 24 dingers, the second-most home runs ever in a MAAC single season. The All-MAAC third baseman helped the Stags to their third-straight MAAC Regular Season Championship, becoming the first MAAC program to win three-straight regular season titles outright, while winning 34 regular season contests, the most in program history, which was also the fourth-straight season in which Fairfield won 30 or more contests. Pagliarini’s 1.76 RBI per game led the entire nation and ranks 13th all-time in NCAA history, while also finishing the year ranked third in the country with a .851 slugging percentage, third in RBI, sixth in on-base percentage (.528), and 11th in homers, all of which broke program single season records. Additionally, he claimed the MAAC Triple Crown, also hitting a conference-best .399 batting average to go along with his league-leading home runs and RBI. Pagliarini’s historic spring led to numerous hardware in the MAAC, regionally, and nationally. In the conference, he was named 2023 MAAC Player of the Year, selected to the 2023 All-MAAC First Team, named to the 2023 MAAC All-Championship Team, and placed on the 2023 MAAC All-Academic Team. On a regional level, Pagliarini was named the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Player of the Year, the ECAC Player of the Year, and named an ABCA/Rawlings All-Region First Team selection. Nationally, he became the first player in program history be named to an All-American team, being selected to the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper All-America Third Team and ABCA All-America Third Team. Pagliarini graduated as the program's all-time home run king with 40 long balls and holds the school's all-time standard for slugging percentage (.637), while also ranking second all-time in on-base percentage (.455), third in RBI (147), third in walks (113) and eighth in total bases (313). He capped off his historic career by being drafted in the 19th round of the 2023 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Seattle Mariners, making him the 21st Stag all-time selected in the draft.
“After an All-America season to conclude his remarkable career as a Stag, it is both a fitting and well-deserved honor to select Charlie as the MAAC Male Student-Athlete of the Year,” said Fairfield University Vice President for Athletics, Paul Schlickmann. “Pags has left his mark not just on the record books, but on a culture of competitive excellence, dedication and respect that will help Fairfield Baseball continue to succeed for years to come. We are all tremendously proud of Charlie as an athlete, a student, and a person, and we look forward to seeing him compete at the next level as he begins his professional career with the Mariners organization.”
