Mount St. Mary's Mourns the Loss of Alex Van Pelt

September 10, 2024-- Mount St. Mary's mourns the loss of Alex Van Pelt, who passed away on Sunday morning. Alex was a first-year student-athlete from Danville, Virginia.

Alex, who was recruited to the Mount's NCAA Division I baseball team as a right-handed pitcher, was a stand-out baseball player at Chatham High School. As a senior, he struck out 117 batters with a fastball of up to 94 mph and was named district and regional player of the year as well as to the All-State team. Like many students in their first semester, he had not declared a major.

Services for Alex will be on Saturday, September 14. Visitation will be at Dan River Church in Danville, Virginia from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., followed by a celebration of his life. The church is located at 2805 Riverside Drive in Danville. Mourners are asked to wear teal and purple, the colors of Alex's high school.

A prayer service will be held in the IC Chapel on Monday, September 16 at 5 p.m. The service, to be led by Fr. Justin Gough, university chaplain, will include readings from Sacred Scripture, prayers for the peaceful repose of Alex's soul and the consolation of his family and friends, and music. Members of the Campus Ministry and Counseling Services teams will be present after the service for support. The entire Mount St. Mary's community is invited and encouraged to attend.
