EDISON, NJ (Feb. 20, 2025) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) today announced, that the Friday, February 28 Saint Peter’s University at Quinnipiac University men’s basketball game, has been flexed to ESPNU as part of the MAAC Wildcard Game package. The contest will tip at 7 p.m. in Hamden, CT at M&T Bank Arena.
The matchup puts the defending MAAC Champions against the defending MAAC Regular Season Champions. Quinnipiac is being flexed to ESPNU for the second time this season – sixth time dating back to 2021-22 – following its February, 14 Valentine’s Day clash with in-state rival Sacred Heart. For Saint Peter’s, the Friday night bout will be the third ESPNU wildcard selection dating back to 2021-22, with the two previous flexed games occurring in 2022. The Bobcats and Peacocks previously played on ESPNU back on February 4, 2022, with Saint Peter’s defeating Quinnipiac, 83-74 at home in Jersey City, NJ. Friday’s game will be the second regular season meeting this season between the two sides, with the first game happening on January 3 in Jersey City, resulting in a 59-46 road victory for Quinnipiac.
The 2023-24 MAAC Regular Season champions, the Quinnipiac Bobcats (16-10, 12-3 MAAC) have sole possession of first place on the MAAC standings and have clinched a berth into the MAAC Championship 10-team field. For the second straight season, Quinnipiac began league play with a 9-1 record through 10 conference games, and the team has won 11 or more MAAC games for the third straight season. The Bobcats have won two in a row, defeating Sacred Heart, 99-90 on February 14, on ESPNU and topping Iona, 79-74 on February 16. Quinnipiac is the top rebounding units in the MAAC, leading the league in rebounds per game (39.0), rebound margin (6.1) and defensive rebounds per game (26.9), while ranking fourth in offensive rebounding average (12.0). Quinnipiac will travel to Manhattan University on Sunday, February 23 ahead of the ESPNU contest.
The 2024 MAAC Champions, the Saint Peter’s Peacocks (9-13, 4-10 MAAC) are riding a two-game winning streak heading into the week. The Peacocks earned a pair of home wins last week, knocking off Fairfield, 65-62 on February 14 and edging in-state rival Rider, 66-65 on February 16. Saint Peter’s ranks second behind the Bobcats on the MAAC leaderboard in rebounds per game (37.0) and rebounding margin (6.0). They also rank second in field goal percentage defensive and three point percentage defensive. Saint Peter’s upcoming slate will include a road game at Mount St. Mary’s University on February 21 and a home contest with Sacred Heart on February 23.
The MAAC Wildcard Game format allows ESPN to pick any game scheduled for that specific date to air on ESPNU and allows the MAAC and ESPN the flexibility to showcase the best matchups as the season progresses. Future MAAC wildcard matchups will be announced at later dates.
The 2024-25 campaign culminates with the 2025 Hercules Tires MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships from March 11-15 at Atlantic City's Historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall for the sixth consecutive year dating back to 2020.
