EDISON, NJ (Feb. 21, 2025) – The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) today announced, that the Thursday, March 6 women’s basketball game between Fairfield University and Siena College, has been flexed to ESPNU as part of the MAAC Wildcard Game package. The primetime contest will take place at Leo D. Mahoney Arena in Fairfield, CT, with opening tip set for 7 p.m.
The lone women’s wildcard game of the season will be a matchup between the most dominant MAAC team over the past two seasons in defending MAAC Champions, Fairfield and a Siena squad that has finished top five in the league every season dating back to 2021-22, including winning at least 12 MAAC games every season the past three years.
Defending MAAC Champions and Regular Season Champions, the Fairfield Stags (22-3, 16-0 MAAC) are 16-0 in the league for the second straight year and riding a 39-game winning streak against conference foes, last losing in March of 2023. Fairfield’s 39-game winning streak against MAAC opponents is the second-longest in conference history behind Quinnipiac’s 52 win streak from 2014 through 2016 and is the fourth-longest active streak in the nation. The Stags lead the MAAC in 13 NCAA statistical categories, most notably ranking first in scoring offense (74.9), scoring defense (53.8), and scoring margin (21.1). Nationally, Fairfield is in the country’s top 15 in seven categories which include assists to turnover ratio, assists per game, field goal percentage, scoring defense, scoring margin, three point attempts per game, and made three pointers per game. Fairfield will play in a pair of games ahead of the March 6 meeting, traveling to Mount St. Mary’s on February 27 and hosting in-state rival Sacred Heart on March 1.
The Siena Saints (15-10, 12-4 MAAC) are currently in third place on the conference standings and one of four teams to have already clinched a berth into the MAAC Championship field along with Fairfield. The Saints are on a five-game winning streak following last night’s 66-64 road victory at Niagara. Entering the week, Siena was the third highest scoring unit in the MAAC, averaging 66.1 points per game. Additionally, the Saints ranked second in rebound margin. Siena has a pair of contests before the nationally televised game, starting with a road game at Canisius on Saturday, followed by a home contest with Mount St. Mary’s on March 1.
The MAAC Wildcard Game format allows ESPN to pick any game scheduled for that specific date to air on ESPNU and allows the MAAC and ESPN the flexibility to showcase the best matchups as the season progresses.
The 2024-25 campaign culminates with the 2025 Hercules Tires MAAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships from March 11-15 at Atlantic City's Historic Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall for the sixth consecutive year dating back to 2020.
