Quinnipiac and Rider Earn Road Wins, Four Teams Draw in MAAC Women’s Soccer Season-Opening Action on Thursday

EDISON, NJ (Aug. 19, 2022) – Quinnipiac and Rider combined for six goals in a pair of season-opening road victories and Canisius, Iona, Marist, and Mount St. Mary’s earned draws in the first day of MAAC women’s soccer action on Thursday.

Quinnipiac women’s soccer scored three times in the second half of Thursday's season opener, downing Lafayette on the road by a final score of 3-0. After both teams played to a scoreless tie in the first half, Quinnipiac’s Courtney Chocol was able to find the back of the net twice in the second half to secure the first multi-goal game of her career. Anna Costello scored the Bobcats’ second goal of the contest with her first collegiate goal while goalkeeper Sofia Lospinoso stopped the only two shots she saw in net en route to earning her first shutout of the 2022 campaign.

Margret Fridriksson scored a goal and added an assist in her Rider debut and Ellie Sciancalepore made eight saves as the Rider women's soccer team earned a 3-2 season-opening win at Wagner on Thursday night at Hameline Stadium. Less than four minutes into the game, Camryn Dees scored her second career goal off Fridriksson's assist, followed by Fridriksson’s goal scored off Leonor Alves' first career assist in the 18th minute. Just over a minute into the second half, Logan Racine scored from 20 yards out for her first career goal, pushing the Broncs' lead to 3-2.

Tiani Fonoti scored in the 80th minute and goalkeeper Jordan Spencer made four saves to pace Canisius in a 1-1 draw against St. Francis Brooklyn on Thursday at the Demske Sports Complex. Fonoti was able to draw the Golden Griffins level in the 80th minute as she collected a flick from Madeline Weltin in the middle of the field and raced down the right side before placing a shot off the left post and in from 12 yards out to knot the score at 1-1. Canisius outshot St. Francis Brooklyn, 10-7, for the contest, highlighted by a 4-2 edge in the first half. The Griffs also enjoyed a 5-4 edge in corner kicks taken.

Iona opened the 2022 season with a scoreless draw on the road at Holy Cross on Thursday. Emma Havrilla made five stops in goal to earn the first clean sheet of the season and 10th shutout of her career for the Gaels. Gabby Dellocono, Samantha Hogan, Kate McNally and Victoria Mule logged two shots apiece for the Gaels while McNally was the lone member of the Maroon and Gold to register two shots on net.

The Marist women's soccer team started off the season with a 2-2 draw against St. Bonaventure in a non-conference matchup on Thursday evening. The Red Foxes got on the board first as Nicole Colantuono took an assist from Grace Divincenzo and buried the first goal of the match in the 53rd minute. After the Bonnies equalized and went ahead, Marist’s Samantha Caldarelli scored the unassisted equalizer in the 75th minute for the draw. Marist held advantages in shots (27-5), shots on goal (11-2), and corner kicks (6-2) for the match.

Mount St. Mary's opened the 2022 season with a hard-fought 1-1 draw with visiting Western Carolina on Thursday night at Waldron Family Stadium. Nicole Wilson scored in her collegiate debut to provide the Mount's offense; Gia Johnson controlled the ball on the left wing and sent the ball to the middle, Taylor Simmons corralled the ball near the top of the box and found Maevyn Jones, who tapped a pass to Wilson in the middle of the box. Wilson was able to put a right-footed strike inside the near post to even the score at 1-1. Goalkeeper Arden Lembryk made eight saves, including a fantastic save in the final seconds to preserve the tie.

Saint Peter’s women’s soccer dropped a 2-0 decision to Bryant in the Peacocks’ season opener on Thursday afternoon. Freshman goalkeeper Olivia Mackethan was called into action early, making a save in the first minute to keep the match scoreless, and finished with five saves in her collegiate debut. The Peacocks registered three shots, with one apiece from Fatou Doucoure, Alyssa Hackett, and Jazmin Brown, with Hackett’s serving as Saint Peter’s one shot on target for the match.

Facing a tough test on the road to begin its 2022 season, Siena was challenged by defending NEC champions Central Connecticut State on Thursday evening, dropping the season opener by a final score of 2-0. CCSU outshot Siena, 7-6, during the first half of play as seven different Saints registered a shot in the season opener, with Caitlin Wania, Grace Dimkopoulos, and Cora Keohane leading the way with two shots apiece. Goalkeeper Angela Fini played the entirety of the match in goal, registering seven saves in her collegiate debut in the Green and Gold.
 
The 2022 MAAC Women's Soccer Championship will take place from October 30 through November 6. The six-team, single-elimination championship will be hosted by the higher seed of each match. The opening round will take place on Sunday, October 30, followed by the semifinals on Thursday, November 3, and concluding with the championship match on Sunday, November 6.
