Canisius, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, Saint Peter’s Earn Wins in MAAC Women's Soccer Conference Openers on Saturday

EDISON, NJ (Sept. 19, 2022) – On the opening Saturday of 2022 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) women’s soccer conference action, Canisius, Fairfield, Quinnipiac, and Saint Peter’s took home victories while Marist and Mount St. Mary’s battled each other for a draw.

Jen Romero scored both goals to lift Canisius to a 2-1 victory over Rider in MAAC women's soccer action Saturday. Hannah Freeman accounted for the lone goal for the Broncs. Romero opened the scoring in the 11th minute, heading home junior Tiani Fonoti's cross from just off the back post to give Canisius the early lead. The score remained in favor of the Griffs until the 76th minute, when Freeman fired a ball from just outside the box that found the left post and ricocheted into the Canisius goal to knot the game at 1-1. Romero would once again provide the offense spark for Canisius, this time collecting a flick from sophomore Madeline Weltin in the 85th minute and chipping a ball from the middle of the box that Rider keeper Ellie Sciancalepore was able to get a piece of, but was unable to keep from rolling into the goal to put the Griffs in front for good. Sciancalepore finished with eight saves in goal for Rider while Jordan Spencer finished with five saves for Canisius.

Fairfield opened up MAAC play with a 3-0 road victory over Siena on Saturday. Maddie Mills and Maddy Theriault scored and Katie Wright posted four saves in the shutout victory. The Stags’ first goal came off a set-piece where Caroline Kelly launched a long service into the box and Mills was able to jump and convert the header in the 23rd minute. Fairfield tallied the first four shots in the second half, which was capped by their second goal; after a turnover in the Stags' offensive third, Elle Scott tapped a pass towards the middle of the field for Theriault, and the freshman was able to spin around her defender and unleash a shot to the top corner. Fairfield would cap their scoring when Allie Landino dribbled up the field and took a shot that was redirected off the foot of a Siena defender for an own goal.

Scoring all four goals in the second half, Quinnipiac women's soccer defeated Niagara, 4-0, in the 2022 MAAC opener on Saturday afternoon in Hamden. Courtney Chochol opened the scoring for the Bobcats in the 48th minute, burying a penalty kick to record her third goal of the year. Ella Gagno then scored in the 70th minute on a rebound off a Chochol shot before Chochol scored again in the 82nd minute on a header, assisted by Olivia Scott and Cooke. Just 28 seconds later, Morgan Cupo dribbled the ball to midfield before finding a steaking Cooke, who played the ball past a Niagara defender and sent a shot into the back of the net for her conference-leading ninth goal of the season. Goalkeeper Meaghan Phillips got her first start of the season and took advantage, earning a clean sheet and tallying one save.

The Saint Peter's University women's soccer team defeated Iona, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon. Fatou Doucoure and Gianna Grassifulli scored the goals for the Peacocks. Iona recorded three shots in the first 11 minutes, but none of them tested goalkeeper Olivia Mackethan. The first shot on target of the game came in the 36th minute from Doucoure, who was delivered a beautiful pass from Skyler Owens. Doucoure slotted the ball into the right side of the goal with her left foot to put the Peacocks up 1-0. Alyssa Hackett set up Grassifulli for her first career goal to put the Peacocks up 2-0 in the 50th minute. The Gaels were awarded a penalty kick in the 69th minute, but they hit the crossbar and Saint Peter's was able to clear. Iona then scored in the 71st minute to cut the deficit in half, but that 2-1 score would stand as time expired.

Trailing by two goals just eight minutes into the game, Mount St. Mary's rallied to earn a 2-2 draw with visiting Marist in the MAAC opener on Saturday. Marist came out on fire, scoring a pair of goals in the opening 7:41. In the third minute, Nicole Calantuono collected the ball near the six foot line and booted it past Camp for the 1-0 advantage. Just under five minutes later, Marist took advantage of an own goal to take a two-goal lead. Mount St. Mary's took advantage of a set piece to get back into the game in the 26th minute as the Mount earned a corner kick and Kalli Bell played a short corner to Luisangely Navas, who dished the ball back to Bell for the cross. Bell's ball to the middle was headed into the air by Madison Bee, and Kayley Kocent followed by heading that attempt to the left of Marist goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner.
 
The Mountaineers came out strong in the opening moments of the second half, earning an early corner kick opportunity in the 47th minute. Bell took the kick and sent the ball to the middle, but a Marist defender was able to push the ball out near the top of the penalty area. Navas collected the ball there and sent a shot that beat Kelchner to her lower right for the equalizer. As the second half went on, the intensity picked up, but neither team was able to find the go-ahead score.  Camp came up with her best save of the day in the 89th minute, coming to for a sliding stop on an Amanda Caldarelli shot to preserve the tie. For the game, Camp made eight saves for the Mountaineers while Kelchner had one save for the Red Foxes. 
 
The 2022 MAAC Women's Soccer Championship will take place from October 30 through November 6. The six-team, single-elimination championship will be hosted by the higher seed of each match. The opening round will take place on Sunday, October 30, followed by the semifinals on Thursday, November 3, and concluding with the championship match on Sunday, November 6.
