Martinez of Siena and Kostirko of Mount St. Mary’s Win MAAC Men’s & Women’s Tennis Weekly Awards

Men’s Player of the Week:
Oscar Martinez, Siena

Martinez went 2-0 this past week in leading the Saints to a 4-3 victory against Le Moyne on Saturday. At the #2 doubles position, Oscar Martinez teamed with partner Fabio Varella to defeat Peter Hatton and Luka Stojanovic 7-6 (4). From the #2 singles spot, Martinez beat Leon Grundstroem 6-3, 6-4. Martinez improved his overall singles record to 12-6 and 9-7 in individual doubles play on the season.
 
Women’s Player of the Week:
Sofia Kostriko, Mount St. Mary's
Gr., Mississauga, Ontario, St. Mildred’s-Lightbourn School
 
Kostirko continues to thrive at the No. 1 singles position for the Mount, posting a 2-0 record this week with straight-set wins over Rhode Island's Sophie Herrman (6-2, 6-2) and Niagara's Elena Mayet (6-2, 6-0). Kostirko is now 6-0 this season in dual matches, all at the No. 1 singles position.
 
The 2024 MAAC Men's & Women's Tennis Championships will take place on April 20-21 at Mercer County Park Tennis Center in West Windsor, NJ. The 2024 Championships will be the 12th consecutive time the event is held at Mercer County Park Tennis Center dating back to the 2012 MAAC Men's & Women's Tennis Championships. With 11 institutions strongly bound by the sound principles of quality and integrity in academics and excellence in athletics, the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) is in its 43rd year of competition during the 2023-24 academic year. Current conference members include: Canisius University, Fairfield University, Iona University, Manhattan College, Marist College, Mount St. Mary’s University, Niagara University, Quinnipiac University, Rider University, Saint Peter’s University, and Siena College. Merrimack College and Sacred Heart University will join the MAAC as full members in the 2024-25 academic year, expanding the conference to 13 institutions.
